WNC for Death Penalty Repeal will host the Third Annual Freedom Ball at the Grey Eagle Music Hall, Thu rsday, March 31, starting at 6 p.m. UUCA’s Human Rights Team is a co-sponsor of the event. This year’s party features music from David LaMotte,Skinny Legs and All, The Krektones and Kinjah, with styles ranging from folk to R &B to surf to reggae.
The annual event is held to raise awareness about death penalty issues and to benefit Ed Chapman. Chapman was incarcerated for more than 15 years, sentenced to execution by the state of North Carolina, for murders he did not commit. A legal team based in Asheville won his exoneration, he moved here after his release and he has worked at the Renaissance Hotel (plus held down other part-time jobs) in the years since. But there is no recompense from the state for the years our legal system stole from him, so we hold an annual event to jump-start his life as a free man.
Chapman speaks regularly to youth groups, university audiences and high schools about his experience and urging young folks to learn from his story.
Tickets are $25 for patrons, $15 general admission, $10 students. There will be a silent auction during the evening.
